I missed so many things from home when I first moved abroad; things that I never even used to think twice about. And despite all the new benefits, including walking to work and having Frankfurt’s skyline practically on my doorstep, there was nothing more annoying than not being able to buy the deodorant that I’d been using for years!
It might not seem like a big deal, but when you move abroad and nearly every aspect of your life changes, it’s almost a luxury to have consistencies with such things. Do you know what I mean?
I would slowly collect an “ask next visitor to bring to Germany” list as I sought consistency throughout such a huge change. Whilst this list used to be formed of cosmetic products (I’ve managed to adapt to new brands now haha), almost 3.5 years later, the list now consists of my latest random craving, most recently McVities Chocolate Hobs Nobs, or my favourite my TopShop jeans that I refuse to buy at the price they sell them over here.
In hindsight I don’t think it’s the brand itself that you look for. Rather, the security of home and familiarisation.
One piece of advice would be not to look for an exact replicant of whatever it is you’re missing because you’re unlikely to find it. Instead, accept that you’ll find a similar product and that it will be just as good 🙂
Funnily enough, when I last visited London from Frankfurt, I felt slightly annoyed that I couldn’t find the brand of oats that I always have for breakfast in Germany. Ha! I guess that’s a good thing as Frankfurt really has become my other home now, but don’t get me wrong, I definitely make a mental list of all the food I want to indulge in as soon as I touch down in London city!
What things do you miss the most?
Hi babes total agree about the things you miss, living in the Gambia for a year now and miss my Jamaican food. So when anyone’s travelling I ask if they can carry a tin, but the weight can be to much🤷🏾♀️ however I’m enjoying the fresh food here, but still make that mental list for a bit of junk food lol
