A summer weekend in Frankfurt- Things to do

Whether you are new to Frankfurt, looking for something to do or are having guests for the weekend, it’s always good to get recommendations from a local. Here are my top suggestions for a summer weekend in Frankfurt. Enjoy!

Friday

Morning: 
Breakfast @ Elaine’s deli

A scenic walk along the River Main
– Start at Willy Brandt Platz (finance district)
– Walk along the River Main and head to the Iron Bridge (Frankfurt’s very own love lock bridge) for a view of Germany’s only skyline.
– After walking along the Iron Bridge, go to the Römer, the famous square in Frankfurt’s Old Town, where you can stop for a beer or Bratwurst in a typical German Kneipe.

Afternoon: 
Head to Palmengarten, Frankfurt’s botanical gardens located in the middle of the city, where you can take a look at the tulip garden, go inside the green houses, hire boats and also stop for lunch.

Evening:
Have dinner @ Oosten and watch the sunset over the skyline from their roof terrace.

Saturday

Morning:
Breakfast @  Balance Deli

Take another walk to see more of the city:
– Start at Eschenheimer Tor and walk through Bockenheimer Anlage (park) so that you end up at Alte Oper, Frankfurt’s famous Opera house.
– Head to Goetheplatz and then to Hauptwache for the main shopping street.

Afternoon:
Go up Frankfurt’s Maintower for a 360 view of the entire city.

If the weather’s good, make sure you visit either City Beach or Long Island Summer Lounge for the afternoon/ evening. They are both perfect rooftop summer locations for food, drinks, music and they even have small pools. Make sure you check the websites before to know if they are open, you’ll need 5 EUR cash for entry.

Evening:

Have dinner on Oeder Weg, below are a few of my favourite restaurants:
@Superbros for pizza
@Vipho for Vietnamese
@Aroma for Middle-Eastern bistro/ takeaway

Or head to Aroydee on Stiftstraße for Thai. You can go up to the Flemings Rooftop Bar to enjoy a drink with a view and then head to Good Times For Good People, across the road for more drinks or to Kleine Hochstraße and Kaiserhofstraße for more bars.

Sunday

Morning
Breakfast @ Cafe Karin

Afternoon
Visit Museumsufer, home to Frankfurt’s numerous museums to see what’s on and then head to Main Cafe, which is a cafe/ bar located directly on the River Main and has all of its seating outside.

Evening
If there’s one thing you do before you leave, make sure you go to Eis Christina to try the best ice-cream in Frankfurt. There’s usually a queue, so give yourself some time and you could always order Spaghetti Eis, a German favourite.

Supermarkets and clothes shops are closed on Sundays (but restaurants and cafes are open), so make sure you buy any souvenirs on the Friday or Saturday.
