House of Bluecherry: a hair and beauty concept

I have never felt as good as I do when leaving a hair salon as I do when leaving House of Bluecherry. Why? Because Harmonie, the owner, cares. I didn’t just walk out with a new hairdo. I walked out with a new appreciation of my magnificent afro hair.

Located in central Frankfurt, I had walked past House of Bluecherry several times before feeling confident enough to open the door. I was confused. I couldn’t quite work out if this salon with its eye-catching interior was made for people like me. It’s sad to say but as a Black woman in Europe with afro hair, strolling into a salon that has been decorated and furnished with love and care is not the norm. I am used to having my hair done by my mum, an aunty or a friend of a friend – or going to a hair salon that has more or less been thrown together. But after a warm welcome from Harmonie when I eventually walked in, I’m glad to say that I left having booked an appointment. Was I excited? Yes. Was I nervous? Also yes.

How was the appointment?

Harmonie’s service is the definition of TLC. As we got talking I began to understand why House of Bluecherry is a ‘hair and beauty concept’ rather than simply a salon. Whilst being advised and educated about my hair and the natural products that would maintain the health of my curls, Harmonie explained that her business model focuses on inclusivity and empowerment.

She also reminded me that I can relax haha! I was nervous as I watched my hair being cut into a new shape. My mum is the only person who had taken a pair of scissors to my hair in over a decade!

Anyway, House of Bluecherry provides for all hair types – and I really mean all hair types. You’ll see this reflected in the Instagram content. Harmonie comes from a diverse background herself, so she wants to promote diversity and inclusion within her salon – she has wigs, extensions and natural hair services such as braids, locs, cornrows, silk presses and cuts for all hair types.

But Harmonie wasn’t doing all the talking. I shared a bit about myself too – my cultural background, moving from London to Frankfurt, and so on. And when asked, I also provided some constructive feedback. Harmonie asked why I initially hesitated to go into the salon. Well, as well as not having the usual setup of an afro hair salon in Europe, I expected to only see Black people in a hair salon that caters to afro hair. But at House of Bluecherry, this was not the case. Harmonie hires from all backgrounds as this reflects the diversity and inclusion aspect of her salon.

I should also mention that I was in and out of the salon within a couple of hours and didn’t have to reserve my entire Saturday for the appointment – unfortunately another aspect of afro hair salons that is not the norm!

Did I like my haircut?

I LOVE my new haircut. I write in present tense because almost a year later and I still wear the same style. And by the way, I have sent a good amount of selfies to my friends because I am honestly just so happy with it.

My personal preference is a twist-out, rather than a wash-and-go look. So just as I was doing before my appointment, I have continued to twist my hair at night. I’ve made one change though: I now use the Omaka organic aloe vera and coconut oil leave in conditioner and Eubiona aloe vera and argon oil detangling spray to lock in moisture and add sheen to my hair. Both of which I’ve now purchased several times from House of Bluecherry. For the first time ever, I can rock a twist-out that has been professionally shaped just for me!

I’ve also recommended several friends who are now regular clients too. Trust me, it’s the place to be!

Where is House of Bluecherry?

Whether you want to have a peek or book an appointment, I’d recommend you visit the salon in Frankfurt’s city centre (Eschersheimer Landstraße 34) to have a look for yourself. The shop windows are full of different wigs and products, and it’s always nice to get a feel of a place you’ve been recommended. If you don’t have time though, you can visit the website or head to the House of Bluecherry insta account – they post every day, so you’ll have ongoing updates of the styles and services that Harmonie offers.

I hope you enjoy the House of Bluecherry experience and leave feeling just as empowered as I did!
